The first global erectile dysfunction drugmaker to make a generic, and its US subsidiary, Levitra, to sell a version of Viagra that is not available by its name, could lose billions in sales next year.
The drugmaker that is based in the US has said the global erectile dysfunction drugs market is valued at $50 billion and is expected to reach $53 billion by the end of this year.
Other companies that are developing their own versions of Viagra include Apotex Inc, Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc, Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc, and Sandoz Inc.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, was developed by Bayer and is sold in 25 countries around the world. The other major erectile dysfunction drug, Levitra, is a generic version of Viagra and is marketed for its effectiveness and safety.
The new product will have a lower price tag than Viagra and is significantly cheaper than Levitra, which had to pay to market the little blue pill in the United States in 2004 and Europe in 2005, and now sells at about $50 per pill. Pfizer Inc, the world's largest drugmaker, is developing its own version of Viagra and has been marketing its product as a "miracle pill" for its patients to take.
"Pfizer has made a decision to stop marketing Viagra as a treatment for erectile dysfunction," said Ian Read, Pfizer's president and chief executive, as part of a new round of media relations.
"We are not pursuing this decision lightly. It may be years before the full extent of Pfizer's marketing and sales problems is known."
While the erectile dysfunction drugs market is growing at a fast pace, the market for Viagra is already growing at a faster rate than the global erectile dysfunction market. The erectile dysfunction drugs market is estimated at $50 billion in the US alone.
Pfizer's sales growth was up 8 percent in the second half of last year and it is projected to grow at a rate of 4.3 percent annually from the first half of 2006.

Sales of generic versions of these drugs have increased at a slower rate than the global erectile dysfunction drugs market, with the latter costing less.
Pfizer said its first-quarter sales grew 13 percent in the second half of 2006 and it expects to grow 13 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007.
